London: English county champions Surrey have strengthened their squad for the 2001 season by signing England seam bowler Ed Giddins on Monday. The 29-year-old moves to The Oval from Warwickshire and has agreed on a two-year contract. Giddins began his county career with Sussex but left Hove after being banned for 18 months after testing positive for cocaine. He returned to action with Warwickshire at the start of the 1998 season. He made his Test debut against New Zealand in 1999 and was named man-of-the-match after taking seven for 42 in England's innings victory over Zimbabwe in the first Test at Lord's last year. "We are extremely pleased that Ed has chosen to join Surrey. He is a top class performer and will bring further strength in depth to our squad," Surrey chief executive Paul Sheldon said.
