Jan 09, 2001, 18:15 Hrs (IST)
New Delhi: Former cricket captain Mohammad Azharuddin did not turn up on Tuesday before a one-man panel of the sports ministry to explain why the Arjuna Award conferred on him should not be withdrawn.
Manoj Prabhakar also did not show up at the commission on Monday. Azhar was conferred with Arjuna Award in the year 1986.
Azhar, Prabhakar and Ajay Jadeja have been found guilty of match-fixing practices by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Board of Cotnrol for Cricket in India's (BCCI) internal inquiry.
They had been issued a show-cause notice by the Centre to explain their stand on the move to withdraw the Arjuna Awards conferred on them in recognition of their contribution to sports.
Talking to mediapersons at noon Joint Secretary J P Singh said Azhar was to appear at 1100 hrs but there was no news from him. Jadeja has been summoned to appear before the commission on Wednesday.
Azhar has been banned for life from playing any form of cricket in the country and abroad.
