Mumbai: Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray has called an urgent meeting of his party sympathisers in the forthcoming Mumbai Cricket Association following complaints that there was a move to back stab his presidential candidate Ajit Wadekar. In the last election, Shiv Sena leader Manohar Joshi led the majority, but at the end of his term his likely successor Wadekar is receiving lukewarm response and a survey showed that Nationalist Congress party president Sharad Pawar had more support for the post among the 340 odd voting clubs.Pawar, a master at such election games, has already as a sop, released a huge concessional membership of posh Garware Club of which he is president. Such concession was freezed following a dispute between Garware and MCA. Pawar's next goal will be BCCI presidentship, which is the most influential sports post in the country. Now 1,800 cricket club members will be able to enjoy the club facilities at Rs 350 or so for which ordinarily a person has to pay Rs 2.5 lakh for membership.Pawar is supported by former captain Dilip Vengsarkar.Wadekar also received a set back when Ruia College Club for which he represented in MCA withdrew his name and sent the college principal's in his place. Now Wadekar must get a club by Thursday evening otherwise he will not be able to stand for the election. The former cricketer, former selector and former coach of India, himselfhas admitted that some hand has played a role in his summons by BCCI Commissioner Madhavan at the time of his election campaign and it could affect his chances. There was also a fear that Manohar Joshi, who is on friendly terms with Pawar, may not canvas for him. Wadekar reportedly met Thackeray for help.An MCA source said in the last election Wadekar had ignored his own panel member at the instance of former captain Mohammed Azharuddin and voted for Shetty, hotel owner, which may work against him.Pawar is aware of this scenario but has himself fielded a candidate of dubious distinction. The said candidate was blackballed by MCA following the electronic scoreboard scandal during the 1996 World Cup, which made MCA lose a staggering amount. Friday is the day of nomination and election will take place on January 19. UNI
