Kanpur: On the third day of the weather-marred Duleep Trophy league match here on Saturday, East Zone made a quick-fire 230 for four after restricting hosts Central Zone to 421 in the first innings.Rohan Gavaskar (51 not out) and R R Parida (53) did the answering for East Zone, helping them pile 230 in their first innings. Bad weather and dense fog, which had forced the organisers to abandon almost the full pre-lunch session play during the first two days, also spoiled 71 minutes of play on Saturday as the match could be resumed only around 11:15 hrs.Besides the two half centuries by Rohan and Parida, a fine five-wicket haul by seamer Zaved Zaman and three wicket feat by spinner Sukhvinder Singh were the other highlights of the East Zone camp. Resuming the day's play from the overnight score of 417 for eight wickets, Central zone batsmen Kulmani Parida and AW Zaidi could not stay at the crease for long and Zaidi (7) was clean bowled by Zaman on the last delivery of his very first over. In the next over, Parida (9) also returned to the pavilion giving an easy catch to Sanjai Raul at mid-on, the second delivery of Mihir Diwakar's second over. In this manner, the host team's first innings ended after adding only four runs to the overnight score. Zaman was the most successful East zone bowler, capturing five wickets for 99 runs while Sukhvinder bagged three wickets for 89 runs. Diwakar bagged two wickets for 95 runs. East Zone opened its innings well with skipper Shiv Sundar Das and Nikhil Haldipur starting aggressively, scoring 18 runs in four overs bowled in the pre-lunch session. After lunch break, the East Zone openers maintained the fast scoring and carried the score to 61 without loss in 12.3 overs. At this juncture, East Zone sustained its first jolt when skipper Das misjudged a straight delivery from J P Yadav and was declared leg before wicket at his individual score of 40, which came in 51 deliveries with the help of eight boundaries. Das was replaced by Parida to keep up the tempo generated by the openers. However, after the dismissal of Das, his opener partner Haldipur was also not feeling comfortable and lobbed an outward delivery from Yadav to Abhay Sharma behind the wicket who made no mistake. During his 94-minute stay at the crease, Haldipur scored 34 runs with four boundary hits. Then Sanjai Raul took the guards but he could also stay only for about half an hour and during this, he contributed 11 runs before being bowled out by Kulmani Parida. The East zone score was 120 for three wickets. At this point, Rohan came to the crease with determination to give a useful stand to senior partner Parida. Both the batsmen succeeded in keeping the scoreboard moving till tea break without further loss. At tea, East Zone's score was 167 for three. Parida was batting at 49 runs and Rohan at 18 when the team went for tea. After tea only 14 runs could be added and soon after East Zone suffered another blow as Parida was declared leg before wicket off a delivery from Murli Kartik. In his fine innings of 53 run, Parida faced 110 deliveries and hit one sixer and six boundaries. After his exit, Rohan continued his aggressive batting and hit 50 off 109 deliveries with two sixers and four boundaries. Rohan was batting on 51 and Rajiv Kumar on 20 when play was concluded earlier than schedule in view of bad light. UNI
