Sri Lanka cricket TV deal goes sour
Jan 24, 2001, 10:15 Hrs (IST)
Colombo: Sri Lanka's television rights deal with the Indian arm of an Australian media group has gone sour and the Cricket Board here wants to renegotiate with another bidder, officials said on Wednesday.
The Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka (BCCSL) entered into an agreement with World Sports Group-Nimbus (WSG-Nimbus) for sponsorship rights for a three-year period in December.
But the Board said in a statement that WSG-Nimbus failed to provide the required bank guarantee and an agreement was now impossible.
However, other cricket sources said WSG-Nimbus did not provide the guarantee because the Board failed to provide confirmation for the itinerary for the entire three-year period until 2003.
The Board was now planning to negotiate with Trans World International to award television sponsorship rights for all international matches played in the country.
