New Delhi: North Zone on Saturday assured themselves of retaining the Duleep Trophy after taking an unbeatable lead on the points table even as their last league match against Central Zone headed for a draw on the third and penultimate day. North's route to the championship also became easy with the win of East Zone over their possible rivals South Zone in Agartala.Resuming at their overnight score of 81 for one against the North's mammoth first innings of 690 for eight (declared), the Central Zone batsmen could not give a spirited reply, finishing the day at a poor 370 at the loss of eight wickets. To avoid a follow on, leave alone surpass the North's first innings total, the Central Zone batsmen need to put up a brave face and add 171 runs to Saturday's total. This would take them to 541, the score required to avoid a follow-on.For the holders, the superb batting display of Dinesh Mongia (208) and Reetinder Singh Sodhi (137) was successfully followed up by Rahul Sanghvi with his bowling.
