Cape Town: Former South African and Eastern Province captain KeplerWessels has come under fire for his criticism of the way in which the career of the country's newest bowling sensation, Mfuneko Ngam, is being handled.Ngam is currently recovering from a stress fracture to his thigh after an impressive debut in the South African squad against Sri Lanka, which ended last week. But Wessels, who is now a cricket writer and television commentator, came under attack for his views that Ngam's injuries were due to a wrong diet and his background. Ngam comes from the previously disadvantaged black community in South Africa.Piet van Niekerk, media spokesman for the Eastern Province Cricket Board, described Wessels' claims as "rubbish," adding that any athlete could suffer a stress fracture.Eastern Province team doctor Andre Kilian rejected earlier rumors allegedly started by a doctor that Ngam was suffering from a tissue disease called Marfan's Syndrome. He said he had no doubt that Ngam would recover fully and would be back in action soon.Van Niekerk said the Board refuses to react to Wessels' repeated criticism of the Eastern Province team and management, of which he was once a member himself. "He has a right to his opinion, no matter how laughable it may be,"said Van Niekerk.India Abroad News Service
