Pune: A defiant undefeated knock of 113 by all-rounder Ramesh Powar and his 109 runs seventh wicket stand with Sairaj Bahutule (62) helped West Zone post an imposing total of 656 for 7 declared in their first essay against East on the second day of their four day Duleep Trophy league tie being played at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here on Friday.Despite having gone through the leather hunt for almost two days, East in reply were 50 for no loss with their Test opener and captain Shiv Sunder Das (22) and Zakaria Zuffri (23) remained unseparated in the space of 14 overs and 64 minutes batting.West skipper Sachin Tendulkar applied the closure about 24 minutes after the tea session with the intention of making an early breakthrough but the East openers Das and Zuffri stuck to their task with aplomb. Earlier resuming at the overnight total of 384 for 4, Vinod Kambli (105) and Jacob Martin (2), ground the rival pace and spin attack and added 272 runs losing merely three wickets in the bargain. Much depended on Kambli but the southpaw fell to an express delivery from seamer Zaman which sent his middle and off stump cart-wheeling. But not before he could add 41 runs for the fifth wicket in association with Jacob Martin (39).Kambli paid the penalty after playing half cock to a sharp inswinger, which went through the gate and hit the stumps. His knock of 117 came in 283 minutes in which he failed 179 balls and hit fifteen fours and three towering sixes. Jacob Martin joined by Sairaj Bahutule put on 41 runs for the sixth wicket before the former was run out for a well-made 39. Going for a single Martin could not beat Das' throw to keeper Deep Dasgupta. The Mumbai all-rounder Ramesh Powar who joined his teammate Bahutule showed the traditional grit and determination and the two went about their task in a professional manner and added 109 runs for the seventh wicket.
