Sydney: Australia wants to shorten Test cricket matches from five to four days as part of a series of radical proposals to change the game. Most of the proposals deal with One-day cricket, but the move to cut a day from Tests has been steadily gathering support with former Australia captain Mark Taylor and the Australian Cricket Board chairman Malcolm Speed both backing the idea.Speed, who will soon join the International Cricket Council (ICC), told The Australian newspaper on Saturday that the Australian Cricket Board would ask the ICC to look at the proposal.''It's rare that a Test goes for the full five days, and often when they go to four or five days they fizzle out anyway,'' Speed said. The ICC will also be asked to consider changes to the rules of One-day cricket. These will include loosening fielding restrictions and bonus runs for scoring boundaries during the 15th and 40th overs when the game normally slows down.Copyright AFP 2000
