UPCA, who elected to bat after winning the toss, lost two quick wickets of Dipankar Malviya (13) and M Tripathi (1) with the team score on just 29. However, Nasir Ali (50 ) and Mohd Kaif (72) steadied the innings, putting up 61 runs for the third wicket. Nasir departed, giving an easy catch to Laxman off Harbhajan. His 56-ball half century included four hits to the boundary. Kaif, who bagged the man-of-the-tournament award, consumed 97 balls for his knock, which had two boundaries. The UPCA innings also saw a quick-fire 24 runs from Praveen Gupta off just 30 balls with the help of two boundaries. For the Airlines team, Nikhil Chopra scalped four wickets for 31 runs while Test star Harbhajan bagged three wickets conceding 55 runs. Vineet Jain took two wickets for 26 runs. Chasing the victory target, Airlines also started in poor fashion, losing the first two wickets of Vijay Dahiya (5) and V V S Laxman (7) with the team score at 29. M Tripathi gave the first breakthrough to UPCA with the second ball of his third over as Dahiya was caught by Kaif. This departure was followed by Laxman who was caught by Lalit Verma at point off M Tripathi. Though Ravneet Ricky (91) and Munish Sharma (26) added a vital 89 runs for the third wicket, the latter was caught at long-on off Lalit Verma. That was the turning point of the Airlines defeat.
