Johannesburg: South African cricketer Jonty Rhodes still regards the catch with which he sent off Sachin Tendulkar in Durban during the Indian tour four years ago as one of his most memorable ones. Rhodes was commenting to the Afrikaans daily 'SportBeeld' in response to the way he dismissed Chris Gayle during the first of seven One-day Internationals against the West Indies on Saturday with his brilliant catch. "I always feel that I'm well-positioned when I can get both hands on a ball. When I caught Tendulkar, I had to dive far and low to the left. I still remember that Geoffrey Boycott insisted that the ball touched the grass first," Rhodes said of that acclaimed albeit controversial catch. But Rhodes, who now plays only One-day cricket for his country at his own request, has been a welcome relief for his teammates who won the five-match Test series preceding the current series 2-1 without him. Rhodes justified views in South Africa that he is one of the best fielders in the world when he also ran out Brian Lara on Saturday. Despite this, Lara was full of praise for Rhodes. "If I had to choose someone in world cricket, I would say that's the guy in whose direction you don't try to hit shots past, because the chances are slim that he will drop a ball if he is anywhere within reach of it," Lara said. "And yes, one has to accept that Jonty's presence considerably increases the pressure on our batsmen," Lara added. Rhodes said he stayed sharp at the nets by having colleagues hit soft balls with a racquet from a close distance to his left and right. India Abroad News Service
