New Delhi: As tainted former Indian cricketer Manoj Prabhakar, wanted for his alleged involvement in cases of misappropriation of public funds, continued to elude the Law, the Uttaranchal police on Tuesday stepped up its efforts to track down the former all-rounder by deciding to send special teams to Delhi and Rajasthan to arrest him. Talking to UNI on phone from Dehra Dun, state police chief A K Sharan said his force was in touch with the Delhi and Rajasthan police and a special team headed by an Inspector was being sent to arrest Prabahakar and produce him before the court in Haldwani (Nainital), which issued non-bailable warrants (NBWs) against him. This is the second time when police have decided to send a team to arrest Prabhakar. A team had earlier gone to Delhi to hand over the warrants to the South Delhi police under whose jurisdiction the ex-cricketer's residence and office fall. Police went on the look out for Prabhakar after the issuance of the NBWs against him for allegedly defrauding general public of crores of rupees and asked the force to execute them at the earliest. The Uttaranchal police subsequently sent its team to Delhi and requested the Delhi police to help in executing the warrants, but the request is still pending as Prabhakar is not in the capital. Asked whether the Rajasthan police has been requested to arrest the ex-cricketer who is reportedly in Jaipur attending some 'seminar', Sharan said he was in touch with the Rajasthan police, but a formal request would be sent once it is confirmed that Prabhakar is in Jaipur and not in Delhi, where he works and resides. "We are waiting for the Delhi police to confirm that Prabhakar is not in the capital and has gone to Jaipur. Once this is confirmed, we will formally seek the assistance of the Rajasthan police," the Director General of Police said. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) of Nainital has been directed to form a team of officials and despatch them to the national capital and, if necessary, the team can then proceed to Jaipur. Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) P Kamaraj said Prabhakar is not in the capital, but the police will arrest him as soon as he comes to his home or office. When contacted, a member of Prabhakar's family maintained that he was in Jaipur attending a 'seminar'. Prabhakar's family, which had on Saturday said that he would return home within the next couple of days, on Tuesday stated that they did not know when exactly he would return. "He is not at home... He is out of station... We don't know when he will return." The Nainital police had registered four cases under sections 406 and 420 (cheating and fraud) of the Indian Penal Code against Prabhakar and two others in May-June last year for allegedly swindling public money through the Uttaranchal-based Apace Indian Group of Companies in his capacity as Director.
