Durban: South African cricket captain Shaun Pollock could be forgiven if it was the trying times of the West Indian tour that caused it, but few people would get on a plane that was heading in the opposite direction to where they were heading and find out about it on the flight. That is exactly what happened early last week. An obviously embarrassed Pollock admitted to the Afrikaans weekly 'Rapport' that he had boarded a plane from Johannesburg to Cape Town while thinking that he was flying to Durban. But Pollock would not say anything more about the incident.Durban is on the eastern coast of South Africa, an hour's flight from Johannesburg, while Cape Town is about two hours away on the west coast.Member of Parliament Cassie Aucamp, a keen cricket fan, told Rapport that he recognised Pollock on the flight and approached him to chat. "We were in the air for about an hour already when I went over and introduced myself. He was very friendly," said Aucamp. "He told me that he had spent the day in Johannesburg playing golf. I told him that I was on my way to Cape Town for the parliamentary session, upon which he said that he would be in Cape Town the next day as well, for a meeting with Sports Minister Ngconde Balfour," Aucamp added."I was very surprised. 'How's that?' I asked him, as this plane is going to Cape Town (tonight). No, he answered, we're on our way to Durban," saidAucamp. Pollock then took out his boarding pass, which reflected Johannesburg-Cape Town."If I had not talked about it, Pollock would probably have arrived in Cape Town before he realised he was not in Durban," Aucamp said. The flight crew made immediate alternative arrangements to help Pollock out of his predicament. They advised his wife and put steps in place to correct the situation. While Pollock might have been confused about the Durban stopover, he certainly arrived well in advance for the meeting with Balfour in Cape Town the next day. No details of the purpose of the meeting were available.IANS
