Johannesburg: Former South African national cricket team captain Hansie Cronje has said that he is "not proud" of the Newsmaker of the Year Award that he was given earlier this week by the Pretoria Press Club.Cronje received the award jointly with the South African Air Force, which made international headlines for its rescue mission in neighbouring Mozambique after floods ravaged it.Press Club chairman Yusuf Abramjee, however, emphasised at the time that the award to Cronje should not be seen as one of merit, but rather for having dominated the headlines for his involvement in match-fixing.Cronje told the Afrikaans daily 'Beeld' that he had not attended the awards evening on Tuesday because "my case is still sub judice." Cronje is fighting in the high court here a life ban slapped on him by his former employers, the United Cricket Board of South Africa (UCBSA). In terms of the ban, the UCBSA does not want Cronje even to make public appearances related to cricket."Someone from the Press Club explained to me broadly that the award was based on the huge amount of news coverage (about my involvement). I accepted the award on that basis," Cronje said."But it is actually not a thing I am proudest about with what I have achieved in my life. I have received many awards in the past for good conduct and achievements. This one is now not for such good behaviour, but I can't change the past," he added.Cronje's appeal will be heard in the high court here at the end of September.IANS
