Jamshedpur: Cricket, perhaps, is the first sports casualty in the new-born state of Jharkhand. After Jharkhand's creation, the Bihar Cricket Association folded up its activity and shifted to Patna to pave the way for the locals to establish their own cricket body. However, instead of a central body, the state is besieged with two cricket bodies - Cricket Association of Jharkhand (CAJ) and Jharkhand Cricket Association (JCA) - which are locking horns to estabilish their supremacy.Jamshedpur-based cricket administrators, who were associated with Bihar Cricket Association (BCA), formed CAJ and elected a new committee headed by Superintendent of Police of East Singhbhum district Amitabh Chowdhury and former Test cricketer Ramesh Saxena as secretary on May 13. Saxena had also served BCA as secretary from 1997 to 1999.But the country's supreme cricket body, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), is yet to take any initiative to give affiliation to the new cricket association.Although both the president and the secretary had promised to get the affiliation, but nothing in this regard has been done so far.The formation of CAJ, however, did not please some cricket administrators in Ranchi and they formed the Jharkhand Cricket Association (JCA), much to surprise of the cricket pundits of this steel city, considered the mecca of cricket in Bihar. The JCA movement was spearheaded by Deval Sahay, a former BCA vice-president and CCL official S P Sinha became the chairman of the ad hoc committee in Ranchi. The on-going tussle between CAJ and JCA further intensified with the announcement of JCA elections, slated for June 17 at Ranchi. JCA claims it enjoys the support of a majority of the district cricket committees while in last month's elections, CAJ was reported to have garnered the support of five district committees, including that of the Ranchi district. According to JCA sources, the association has offered Jharkhand Chief Minister Babulal Marandi its presidentship, on the line of former Bihar chief minister Laloo Prasad Yadav who has taken over as BCA president. The officials of JCA are presuading Marandi to accept the proposal. But, Marandi is yet to give his consent, the sources said.JCA's move, however, received a severe jolt when a BCA member Zaki Ahmed - filed a case against JCA officials, challenging the legality of holding elections in the Jamshedpdur Munsiff Court. The petitioner prayed before the court to declare the proposed elections null and void and also asked for imposing a permanent injunction on all cricketing activities of JCA.The court on June 15 admitted the plea of the plaintiff and issued a show cause notice to JCA and all other defendents. The court also directed all the defendents, including Deval Sahay, to appear before the court to clarify their respective positions, failing which it would pronounce unilateral verdict on the basis of the plaintiff's petition.Meanwhile, the CAJ convened a meeting here, exclusively for the district representatives, to discuss the situation arising out of the tussles, sources said.
