Lucknow: Tainted cricketer Manoj Prabhakar, being sought by the Uttranchal police on charges of cheating and fraud for his alleged involvement with a fly-by-night finance company, on Monday pleaded his innocence in the case."I have come here to clarify my position. I have nothing whatever to do with Apace Leasing and Finance Company, least of all being its director or managing director," Prabhakar told reporters.Currently under liquidation, the company has been charged by investors of "defrauding" them by projecting Prabhakar as its managing director. "It wasPrabhakar's name that gave the company much credibility and led us to make investments," said one of the complainants in a report lodged with the police in Haldwani town of Uttranchal. The case was registered under sections 420 and 406 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).Prabhakar was granted a stay by the Uttranchal High Court last week against a non-bailable warrant issued by a lower court in Haldwani for his alleged involvement in a multi-million scam perpetrated by the finance company."The only time I happened to appear in public before the directors of the finance company was for the launching of my Naturence brand of (cosmetic) products that was entrusted to Apace," Prabhakar said. He suspected that the photographs taken during the product launch could have been misled people into believing that he was part of the company's management. When his attention was drawn to the fact that some of the documents presented by the complainants bore his signature, Prabhakar replied, "A lot of my fans used to take my autograph at these launching ceremonies and I would not be surprised if some of those autographs were later misused in this manner."Prabhakar even claimed that he had "deposits of Rs 25 lakh (Rs 2.5 million) in Apace and I am still trying to recover that."IANS
