London: England captain Alec Stewart has called for fines of up to 10,000 Pounds for unruly fans after a pitch invasion on Sunday forced England to concede an early defeat to Pakistan in the NatWest series. The pitch invasion by hundreds of Pakistani fans at the Headingley ground in Yorkshire left steward Stephen Speight badly injured with rib and spleen injuries and forced the team to concede a match for the first time in the history of cricket.Minutes after the invasion Stewart told the umpires he was conceding the match. He said in a statement, "It was the only thing I could do to guarantee the safety of my players the umpires and the two Pakistan batsmen."In my view we'll have to get tough and impose fines of 5,000 Pounds or 10,000 Pounds for running on the field. We were beaten fairly and squarely, but when other issues like this come into play its a very sad day for cricket."The crowd trouble is the second incident between the two teams in 10 days and has heightened fears about player safety, leading to calls for improved security at cricket grounds. As the crowd dispersed fighting started outside the ground between two nearby pubs. A number of fighting white and Pakistani youth were arrested outside the ground.Witnesses said about two dozen whites waiting on the pavements, outside the pubs, ran at Pakistani fans when somebody shouted "Charge". Fighting between the two groups and the shouting of racial abuse by the whites carried on for 10 minutes before police arrived.IANS
