London: Mike Atherton hit his first century of the season on Tuesday to take Lancashire to 230 for five on the opening day of its English County Championship first division match against Essex at Old Trafford. At the close Atherton was 125 not out, having faced 222 balls including 15 fours. It was the 33-year-old's 54th first-class century, his 29th for Lancashire. This will be the former England captain's last Championship match before he joins up with the Test squad for the Ashes series against Australia.Atherton's innings was all the more impressive given that none of the rest of the top six managed 20.Essex off spinner Peter Such took two for 61 from 26 overs. His performance will have encouraged Lancashire's Sri Lanka off spinner Muthiah Muralitharan as the home team bid for a third straight Championship win.
