Chennai: Former Tamil Nadu left-arm spinner Sunil Subramaniam on Saturday announced his retirement from first class cricket.Sunil, who had represented Tamil Nadu in 66 Ranji Trophy matches and captured 258 wickets with an average of 21.28, holds the record for maximum number of wickets in the national championship along with A G Ramsingh and V V Kumar. He had also performed a hat-trick against Kerala at Tiruvella in 1992-93 series.Sunil had captured six wickets representing Tamil Nadu as a Ranji Trophy champion against the touring New Zealand side during 1998-99.He had also played six Duleep Trophy matches for the South Zone and had captured 19 wickets. He had also captured a wicket in his only Irani Trophy match in 1994-95. Sunil had taken five wickets in an innings 20 times in the first class cricket and 10 wickets in a match four times. ''My only regret is that I could not play for India,'' Sunil said while announcing his decision to hang up his boot to the reporters here. UNI
