Johannesburg: Captain Shaun Pollock has been given a national award for his role in re-establishing the tarnished image of South Africa in cricket circles. The South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) Silver Medal was awarded to Pollock by SABS president and CEO Eugene Julies for providing "outstanding leadership and inspiration".He was also cited for the "difficult task, well done, of repairing South Africa's sporting image in the international arena and (his) efforts to improve the quality of South African cricket in general".Pollock, who was unable to attend the award banquet personally because of prior commitments, said in a video message that he was delighted to receive an SABS stamp of approval.United Cricket Board of South Africa (UCBSA) member Robbie Kurz received the award, which honors South Africans who have made exceptional contributions to the world of quality, on Pollock's behalf."Pollock had taken over from Hansie Cronje in the most difficult circumstances, but has led from the front and earned the respect of his team and his country," Kurz said. He said a key element of Pollock's captaincy was the manner in which he led his traumatised team to victory over Australia in the Standard Bank One-day International series over Australia in April 2000.The team was utterly demoralised at the time after Cronje's revelations of involvement in match-fixing. While Cronje went on to receive a life ban, the team recovered to make its mark in international cricket under Pollock.South Africa's most recent triumph was in the West Indian, where it beat the home team in both Test and One-day series.UCBSA CEO Gerald Majola said, "We are exceptionally proud that Shaun has received this award and that he makes such an effort to set a wonderful example to all South Africans. Congratulations, Shaun, you continue to inspire us."IANS
