Karachi: The eastern Pakistani city of Lahore has been chosen for the ice-breaking Asian Test Championship cricket match between Pakistan and India, officials said on Thursday.Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) media manager Khalid Butt denied reports that the Test, India's first in Pakistan since a 1989-90 tour, would be held in the strife-torn southern port city of Karachi. "We never announced Karachi as the venue for the Test, Lahore is our headquarters and there are several (favourable) aspects to host the match in Lahore," Butt told AFP. The Indian government has banned bilateral cricket ties with Pakistan in protest at Islamabad's alleged support for cross-border terrorism in the disputed region of Kashmir. India refused a Test tour of Pakistan last year, but the two sides have met in multi-nation events. The second Asian Test Championship will be held from September 2001 to January 2002 also involving Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. Pakistan will play Bangladesh in Multan from September 1 to 5 and then meet India in Lahore from September 12 to 16, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) official said. The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) has decided the right to host the final of the Championship will be given to the two finalists and not to Dhaka, Bangladesh, as decided earlier.
