Chennai: Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president A C Muthiah on Friday said the Board survived the most critical phase in its history last year when Indian cricket was rocked by the infamous match-fixing scandal.India was the only country to have initiated action in connection with the scandal and every cricket playing country had acknowledged this, Mr Muthiah said, while presiding over the 71st Annual Day of the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA).Mr Muthiah said India had been the forerunner in stalling match-fixing. "Day in and day out, the Board had to face one obstacle or the other and I think we came out of it," Mr Muthiah said.Referring to the Indian cricket team's first win on a tour abroad against Zimbabwe recently, after it won a match against Sri Lanka in that country in 1993, he said Our performance has also improved."Mr Muthiah also lauded BCCI secretary J Y Lele, who was the Guest of Honour at the function, saying "Both of us have been hitting off well in discharging our duties at the BCCI.""Mr Lele is blessed with the gift of great memory. He can reel off significant events in the history of the Board vividly, off hand," Mr Muthiah said and added in a lighter vein, "He also comes out with frank opinions at times, although he treads on a few toes in the process."Later, Mr Lele and executive director, Southern Region, Indian Oil Corporation M E Vasu, presented various scholarships and awards to talented cricketers selected by the TNCA for the year 2000-2001.
