Johannesburg: Defence of former captain Hansie Cronje by 2003 World Cup boss Ali Bacher has surprised the United Cricket Board of South Africa (UCBSA).Bacher, according to reports in the British media, still sees a role for Cronje, who was banned for life by the UCBSA for his involvement in match-fixing.Bacher reportedly told the British media during a visit to London that there was still a future for Cronje in the game."I am sure there is a role for him some time. I don't know when. He erred grievously and he knows it, but he and his family must have gone through hell and you've got to feel for them," Bacher told the Independent on Sunday newspaper. There is also speculation in English newspapers that Cronje might be included as an ambassador in the 2003 World Cup, to be hosted by SouthAfrica. The UCBSA strongly opposes Cronje's involvement in cricket following the findings of the King Commission of Inquiry into cricket match-fixing.Cronje is appealing the decision in the High Court. UCBSA president Percy Sonn said he was "surprised" at Bacher's reported comments, although he was perfectly entitled to his personal views. Sonn said these views did not represent the official policy of the UCBSA, which is still engaged in the legal battle with Cronje.Bacher's statements were made before the King Commission of Inquiry into cricket match-fixing released its final report on Friday. The report does not grant Cronje indemnity from prosecution, promised to him if he came clean. He may now face a number of criminal charges under corruption, currency and taxation laws, depending on how the director of public prosecutions views his case.IANS
