Johannebsurg: South African opening batsman Herschelle Gibbs, who was caught smoking marijuana in the West Indies, will this week start a six-week-long life skills programme, the United Cricket Board of South Africa (UCBSA) said on Sunday.Gibbs' life skills counselling will take place at the Sports Science Institute in Cape Town and will be supervised by former Springbok rugby captain Morne du Plessis, the board said in a statement. He will have to report to the institute for six hours a week for the next six weeks and will then have to attend a maintenance programme for several months. The programme, which was devised especially to help Gibbs deal with the pressures of international sport, will include stress management, media training, leadership and work experience as they pertain to a prominent sports figure, the UCBSA said. The UCBSA added that it would receive regular written reports from du Plessis on the young batsman's progress.Gibbs was earlier fined 10,000 Rand ($ 1,200) along with five teammates for smoking marijuana in a hotel room in Antigua on April 10.The incident happened when he was four days short of serving out a 12-month suspended sentence of a 10,000 Rand fine and a three-match ban for partying into the early hours of the morning before playing against Australia in a One-day International in Cape Town on April 14 last year. While the UCBSA disciplinary committee did not invoke the suspended penalties, it decided to conditionally extend the suspension to May 31 next year. The trouble-prone Gibbs last year served a six-month ban from cricket for his part in the Hansie Cronje match-fixing scandal.
