Margao: Police has arrested four Goa Cricket Association (GCA) office bearers, including its president and former Deputy Chief Minister Dayanand Narvekar, for their ''failure'' to ensure the safety of spectators during the One-day International cricket match between India and Australia here on April 6 that was hit by a fake ticket scandal.A police spokesman said Narvekar, Secretary Vinod Phadke, Treasurer Rama Shankardas and Joint Treasurer Vivek Pednekar were arrested late on Monday evening for ''endangering human lives'' at the Nehru Stadium, the venue of the match. They were later released on bail. The spokesman said the office bearers of GCA were charged with abdicating their responsibility in implementing measures to ensure the safety of spectators. The stadium had improper barricading, he said. The GCA failed to verify genuine and fake ticket holders leading to fake ticket holders gaining entry into the stadium.Police took the help of structural engineers from the public works department to verify the actual load bearing capacity of the stadium to investigate whether more people than the actual capacity were allowed to witness the match. This is the second time Narvekar, Phadke and Das were arrested in connection with the match. Earlier, they were arrested along with several others for their alleged role in the fake tickets scandal. On April six, trouble broke out during the One-day International match as hundreds of cricket fans, who were holding tickets, could not gain entry into the stadium. The organisers did not open the gates of the stadium on time. The fire services broke open the gates leading to chaos. Police burst teargas shells to disperse the agitated crowd to prevent a stampede. UNI
