New Delhi: Delhi police has busted a major betting racket with the arrest of 18 alleged bookies. The accused were arrested from a luxury hotel in the capital and 13 mobile phones, 18 pagers, cash and some papers on the betting or "satta" operation were recovered from them.Police said the accused were watching an Australia-England Test series match and were arrested after a decoy client convinced them he wanted to place a bet.Crime branch sleuths are on the lookout for the alleged kingpin of the racket,Satish Lala, who is said to be hiding in the Indian capital. Lala is allegedly running several betting syndicates and has already courted arrest in connection with gambling in North West Delhi, police said.Police said the arrested were habitual gamblers and the racket might be connected with match-fixing. The seized electronic gadgets were specially designed for betting operations and the men who had been arrested were in constant touch with other bookies in cities in India and abroad.IANS
