New Delhi: A nexus between cricket match-fixers and bookies has come to light with the arrest of 18 alleged bookies from a luxury hotel in the Indian capital, police said."We suspect strong links between bookies and fixers," Assistant Commissioner of Police (Crime) Rajiv Ranjan told IANS. "Further investigations are on to establish this, but we have not come across the name of any cricketer so far."Police blew the lid on a major cricket betting syndicate run from a five-star hotel in the heart of New Delhi with Thursday's arrest of the 18, who are all said to be millionaires.At the time of the raid, they were playing cards and stake money of Rs 500,000 was recovered. Fifteen of those arrested have been booked for gambling while three others have been charged with impersonation andcheating by giving false information.Police recovered electronic gadgets that were specially designed for the purpose of betting with inbuilt mechanism to send betting rates from Dubai to Mumbai and Delhi, police said.They were supplied by one Siddharth, who used to send the rates to Delhi, police said. He is still absconding.Police sources said, "Investigation has revealed that match-fixers take certain percentage as commission from bookies for fixing matches. Theoutcomes of matches are fixed and then bets are taken."Crime branch sleuths are on the lookout for the alleged kingpins of the racket, Satish Lala, who is said to be hiding in the Indian capital, andGurpreet Singh alias Bobby, who arranged the room. Gurpreet, who runs afurniture shop in West Delhi, had managed to flee before the sleuths raidedthe room.IANS
