New Delhi: Tihar Jail, Asia's largest prison, has scrapped the name of disgraced Indian cricketer Manoj Prabhakar from one of its wards. During his glory days, Prabhakar had a ward named after him in the prison. He was cited as a role model for the prisoners. "We have removed his name," Director General of Tihar Jail, Ajay Agrawal told IANS. The action followed Prabhakar's involvement in match-fixing. He has also been arrested in a case of fraud. Then Tihar Jail chief Kiran Bedi had invited Prabhakar, Sachin Tendulkar and Vinod Kambli in 1993 introduced them as "role models" and named wards after the cricketers.Prabhakar was arrested on July 2 by the police for his alleged links with finance companies that have allegedly cheated thousands of investors in the northern state of Uttaranchal. The police registered a case of cheating against Prabhakar and two others inJune last year for allegedly swindling public money raised by the Uttaranchal-based Apace Indian Group of Companies. Prabhakar was one of its directors. The former cricketer has denied the allegation. Last year, Prabhakar was touted as a hero after he clandestinely videotaped cricketers and cricket officials talking about match-fixing. However, in the investigation that followed, he himself was accused of fixing matches and introducing bookmaker M K Gupta to several international players. He was then barred for five years from playing cricket.IANS
