Kolkata: A heavy security net has been thrown around Indian cricket captain Saurav Ganguly who, along with some other top sports personalities, faces a kidnap threat from a Kashmiri militant group, police said.Ganguly, who arrived in Kolkata on July 9 after the Indian team's tour of Zimbabwe, has been brought under a Z-category security cordon following a kidnap threat from the Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militant group, police said.Indian security agencies have taken the kidnap threat, which star cricketer Sachin Tendulkar also faces, "very seriously".Ganguly, who is normally escorted by a single, siren-bearing, vehicle of the Kolkata police, has now been provided with a posse of plainclothes men who, besides tailing him, will also do duty in the Behala neighbourhood where the cricketer stays.According to city police sources, the sprawling Ganguly residence is being guarded by carbine-trotting commandos as "the authorities are not willing to take any chances".Ganguly, on his return to the city, refused to entertain questions from reporters at the airport. He was received by his wife, Dona, and father, Chandi Ganguly. Ganguly is scheduled to leave the city on July 15 to join the Indian team in Mumbai for the tour of Sri Lanka beginning July 18.The city police has been kept on its toes following intelligence reports that three persons would attempt to smuggle out a substantial amount of incendiaries from Kolkata to Delhi. Despite an alert and regular searches at the airport, nothing has been found so far, police said.IANS
