Australia defeated Ireland in the 1st match of the series at Leinster CC on Thursday, which witnessed variable weather (showers, cold, sunny, showers, cold, sunny...).Ireland won the toss and elected to bat, and was dismissed for a paltry 132 in the 50th over. Therese McGregor continued her form from England, scalping three Irish wickets for 21 runs. Julie Hayes, Charmaine Mason and Lisa Sthalekar picked up two wickets each. Australia's fielding reflected the weather although Ireland appears to have improved since the World Cup. Beggs (45) and O'Leary (42) were the only bats to make double figures. In reply, Australia was 119 for five off 36 overs before the weather conditions prevented further play. Michelle Goszko top scored with 36 not out while Lisa Keightley (28), Belinda Clark (16) and Hayes (15 not out) also chipped in.McDonald, Young and Grearley took one wicket each with the other wickets falling to run outs. The 2nd match will be played on Saturday.
