New Delhi: An Indian court refused bail on Tuesday to banned cricketer Manoj Prabhakar, who was arrested in connection with a financial scam in which investors allege they lost hundreds of thousands of rupees. Prabhakar, who was suspended for five years by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) over match-fixing allegations, was accused last May of involvement in the scandal, though he has denied the charges. A district court in the northern state of Uttaranchal rejected the bail application, which was heard on Tuesday, J C Pandey, special superintendent of police, said from the hill town of Nainital. Pandey said Prabhakar's lawyers could appeal against the decision in the state High Court. Prabhakar was arrested on July 2 and remanded to judicial custody. He has been in hospital in the town of Haldwani in Uttaranchal state since his arrest after complaining of fatigue, which doctors attributed mainly to tension. Prabhakar was arrested under Indian Penal Code sections 406 and 420, which deal with criminal breach of justice and cheating. UNI
