Sri Lanka elects to bat on winning toss
India's tour of Sri Lanka
Is Ganguly's suspension justified?
Bangalore: India bundled out Sri Lanka for a lowly 183 in this the 6th and crucial match of the Coca Cola triangular series at the R Premadasa Stadium on Saturday.Unlike in the past when India let things slip at the death after having the opposition down by the neck, it this time finished off the job without much ado. As has been the case so far with Indias opponents, Sri Lanka got off to a bright and solid start but as has also been the case during the middle innings when the spinners have done major damage, India ripped through the Sri Lankan batting order to get itself back into the game. At this stage, full points to Dravid for handling things well. However, it's early days and a lot of work is yet to be done. Opting to bat, on the best pitch on offer so far, Sri Lanka initially got off to a rollicking start and then settled down to lay a solid platform bringing up the 100 in the 24th over for the loss of no wickets. Sri Lanka going into this match with its old, tried and experienced pair of Jayasuriya-Kaluwitharana as Gunawardane made way for Sangakkara, brought back memories of yesteryears. However, both Kaluwitharana and Jayasuriya, had their share of luck when pretty plumb lbw decisions against them were turned down. That blemish apart, the pair took to the Indian blowers; clubbing them around. Jayasuriya, in particular, being severe on the pacers. But the advent of the spinners slowed downed things by a couple of paces bringing the run rate down to manageable proportions.Jayasuriyas knock of 57 of 72 balls contained one six and five fours. He eventually perished trying to clear Harbhajan over mid-wicket India striking the first blow at 103 in the 25th over.Kalu and Atapattu, then, went about things in a normal fashion trying to build on the opening Sri Lanka had got but the host team was to lose another important wicket in the set Kaluwitharana. Kalu trying to drive Yuvraj through cover region ended up in the hands of Sodhi, who completed a smart catch at extra cover to throw a spanner in Sri Lankas progress. And throw a spanner it did! Sri Lanka was to soon lose the out of form Jayawardene who could not cope with the slipping run rate and the pressure of having to make an impression with the bat Badani doing the damage this time having him caught behind. Sri Lanka 143 for three in the 36th over. This promoted the Sri Lankan camp to send in Vaas in order to strike a few big blows but it was not to be as he failed to fire off the blocks and this put pressure on Atapattu who in an effort to go over mid-wicket found Sodhi his way to have the scoreboard reading 160 for four in the 40th over.In the very next over, Vaas perished trying to hit out at Harbhajan giving Laxman an easy catch at backward square-leg. India at this stage had pulled the game right back by reducing Sri Lanka to 166 for five in the 41st over.Unlike in the previous game, where India allowed its opposition to get back into the game in the last 5-6 overs, it this time conquered more ground by dispatching the previous match (no.5) heroes Perera-Arnold without them effecting much damage. Dravid who by now was marshalling his resources with desired effect, brought on Zaheer Khan who let go one of his lethal Yorkers to uproot Pereras stumps. In the very next over, Nehra complimented his new-ball partner by picking Arnold- caught at point by Yuvraj. To reduce Sri Lanka to 177 for seven. The pair, then, repeated the act when Zaheer removed Dharmasena and Nehra followed it with Muralitharans wicket.Sangakkara was the last to depart Dravid bringing about a run out - to finish Sri Lankas innings at 183.
