The Law Ministry has already been requested to suggest model amendments to the Gambling Acts, Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Uma Bharti informed the Lok Sabha during question hour on July 30. The Centre is also considering the proposal of enacting a code of conduct for the National Sports organisations, she said. A draft code of conduct for cricketers has already been submitted by the Board of Control for Cricket in India to the government. However, government approval was neither sought nor given, she added. She said the CBI has already submitted its report on match-fixing and related malpractices and is further investigating the matter. The report was sent to BCCI for appropriate action against the indicted players. The government has also issued show cause notices to Mohammed Azharuddin, Ajay Jadeja and Manoj Prabhakar for withdrawal of their Arjuna Awards. Azharuddin has challenged the ban order imposed by BCCI in a civil court in Hyderabad and Ajay Jadeja has approached the Delhi High court. The minister sought the members co-operation so that the sports subject could be brought to the concurrent list. The move may help the Centre to deal with malpractices more effectively, she said. However, several members particularly Left parties rejected the call for transferring sports the concurrent list. UNI
