Bangalore: Sri Lanka crushed the New Zealanders by 106 runs on Tuesday at the Sinhalese Sports Club in the Coca Cola triangular series to book its berth for the final. Sri Lanka out played New Zealand in both departments of the game in a truncated encounter 36 overs. New Zealand, in hindsight, must be wondering why it chose to field because its new-ball bowlers did not effect any kind of an influence - which let go the initiative. Once the Sri Lankan batsmen were off they never really looked back, going from strength to strength. Jayawardene who struggled for runs earlier in the tournament, in particular, turned the heat on towards the end to help Sri Lanka set New Zealand 222 runs for victory at 6.16 runs per over.In reply, the New Zealanders were pathetic to say the least. They just never got going and lost wickets in a heap to leave them out of the reckoning as early as the eight over with New Zealand tottering at 18 for five. Vaas cut through the top order as a hot knife through butter, to pin New Zealand on the back foot. On the other hand, Fernando bowled a furious spell of fast bowling and in the process did his captain proud who had thrown the new ball to him. He had the New Zealanders hopping in their crease and had the ball whizzing past. After a needless run out, which brought about the demise of McMillan, Fernando was rewarded with the wicket of Astle in his fourth over. With this the writing was on the wall and all they had left to play for was to put up some runs on the board.New Zealand eventually ended up with 115 for nine. Vaas was declared man-of-the-match for his initial burst. With Sri Lanka through, the battle is now on between India and New Zealand. Sri Lanka takes on New Zealand on Wednesday.
