Melbourne: One of Australia's great sporting arenas, the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), is to be redeveloped at a cost of almost half a billion dollars ($ 250 million) to be ready for the 2006 Commonwealth Games, the state government said on Tuesday.[an error occurred while processing this directive]All sections of the vast ground aside from the 10-year-old Great Southern Stand will be overhauled. The MCC, which manages the ground, will spend 10 million dollars ($ 5 million) per year for 30 years while the Australian Football League will contribute five million dollars ($ 2.5 million) annually for the same period. Some of the funding will come from a levy on ground tickets. After the re-development, the MCG's capacity would be boosted to more than 100,000. "If we want to continue to be Australia's sporting capital we must be able to provide the best facilities in the country," said Victorian premier Steve Bracks.
