Berkshire: Ireland took the number one slot at the Championships this year for the first time, thanks in part to the 5th ODI international hat-trick by Saibh Young. The European Championships were held this year at Bradfield College near Reading in Berkshire. England decided to field its U-19 squad for this tournament, only three full internationals taking part, Arran Thompson (captain), Nicki Shaw and Leanne Davis.[an error occurred while processing this directive]Bad weather gave problems from the outset. The play on Thursday, which was to provide the teams with warm-up games, had to be cancelled completely, and late starts occurred on some subsequent days too. It was a great tribute to the ground staff at the College that play was possible at all on some days. The weather had its affect on the wickets and on the amount of swing the bowlers were able to extract, especially that obtained by the Irish contingent, who seemed to find the conditions very much to their liking. The bounce on both the wickets used was generally low and occasional shooters made life hard for batsmen on all sides. In the main the scoring was low as a result. Scotland was represented for the first time, taking the place of Denmark who did not send a team. Courtesy: Don Miles (www.webbsoc.demon.co.uk)
