Melbourne: Axed Test opener Michael Slater has set about regaining his place in the Australian team with a century in a weekend club match.[an error occurred while processing this directive]The irrepressible New South Wales right-hander was dumped from Steve Waugh's team for the final Ashes Test against England in London two months ago because of poor form and personal issues.Slater only returned home from Europe last week and got straight back to the job when he blasted 111 for his Sydney grade side University of New South Wales last Saturday. He was here on Monday for a meeting of the Australian Cricket Board's (ACB) contracted players ahead of the new season and said he had the right attitude to reclaim his Test spot in the World Champion Australian team."It was hard being left out of that last Test match, particularly as it was always going to be the best pitch of the summer," Slater said. "But for me now that's in the past. What I've got to look forward to is very exciting."I'm looking forward to fighting my way back into the side and becoming a better player again, and a better person." Slater was dropped from the Test team several years ago in favour of Mathew Elliott only to return to Test cricket a stronger and better cricketer."You have your ups, you have your downs. And you don't come back bigger and stronger unless you have your downs," Slater said.
