Nagpur: Skipper V V S Laxman's scintillating 148 and 217-run fourth wicket partnership with man-of-the-match Dinesh Mongia (90 not out) enabled Rest of India to an emphatic six-wicket victory over Baroda on the fifth and final day of the Irani Trophy cricket match on Wednesday.
Rest of India, which at one stage was struggling at 42 for three on Tuesday, while chasing a target of 273 for an outright win reached its target in 77.2 overs. Laxman began briskly driving and cutting with aplomb and hardly looked in discomfort. He was very severe on spinner Valmik Buch stroking some wonderful on drives and scored 78 runs of the 128 conceded by Buch. Mongia on the other hand was sedate and played a sheet anchor role, besides rotating the strike. Mongia played some powerful lofted shots. Laxman got to his 50 by hoisting Buch over mid on for six and Rest of India passed the 100 mark in the process. Skipper Connor Williams unable to stem the flow of runs looked shuffled his bowlers. The Baroda bowling, however, lacked the penetration and variety. Extras: Rest needs 213 for win, 7 wickets in hand Post your views
