Melbourne: Test opener Matthew Hayden hit an unbeaten 145 as Queensland reached 305 for seven on the opening day of its Sheffield Shield match against Victoria in Melbourne on Wednesday.
Queensland collapsed after tea, lurching from 250 for one to 261 for six in 63 balls. Ian Harvey (two for 36) claimed two wickets and Shane Warne (three for 90) snared his three for the day in the spell. But Warne's wickets included controversial lbw decisions against Andrew Symonds, who was well forward, and captain Stuart Law, who appeared to edge the top-spinner onto his pads. Hayden and Jimmy Maher made 176 for the first wicket after Queensland won the toss. Maher was out for 96 when he skied a sweep off Colin Miller to deep backward square leg, where Matthew Inness dived forward to take a great catch.
