Railways thrashes AI to retain title

Faridabad: Railways defended its title in style beating Air India by nine wickets in the final of Senior National Women's Championship at Nahar Singh Stadium in Faridabad on Tuesday.
Chasing the target of 109 in 45 overs in the second innings, Railways cruised through to its target losing just one wicket and with 7.3 overs remaining. Vanitha Viola (50) along with Rajini Venugopla (40) put up 77 runs in 28.4 overs for opening partnership before Rajini was run out. Railways' first innings star Mithali Raj (15) joined Vanitha to take Railways home without any more damage. Earlier, Air India scored 190 runs for the loss of nine wickets in their stipulated 45 overs in the second innings. For Air India skipper Anju Jain (41), Purnima Rau (49) and Sunaina Mehan (47 not out) were the main scores. Once again Railways' left-arm spinner Neethu David destroyed Air India's batting attack to pick achieve a five-wicket haul. She finished with impressive match figures of 11 wickets giving 109 runs in 43 overs. Neethu David was declared the best bowler and Vanitha Viola was adjudged the best batswomen of the tournament. Jhulan Goswami of Air India was given the best promising player award.
