Brisbane: Middle order batsman Nathan Astle surged to New Zealand's highest score of its Australian tour on Thursday as he tamed the Queensland attack on the first day of the four-day match at the Gabba.
Astle was unbeaten on 160 at stumps, hitting 21 fours and two sixes to reach his 14th first-class century as the Kiwis reached 332 for six in their first innings after captain Stephen Fleming won the toss. Astle and Fleming (69) combined for a 175-run stand before all-rounder Chris Cairns (39) and Astle piled on 96 runs for the sixth wicket. Andrew Bichel (two for 54) was the best of Queensland's bowlers while Ashes tourist Ashley Noffke (one for 60) and experienced Michael Kasprowicz struggled.
