Kolkata: The Indian cricketing fraternity on Tuesday reacted with shock and anger at the "very harsh" punishments meted out to six of the country's top players now touring South Africa.Assailing the decision of the match referee Mike Denness as "very harsh", national selector and former Test cricketer Ashok Malhotra said, "Never in the long history of the game have so many cricketers been punished at one go. It is shocking to say the least". Malhotra virtually questioned the neutrality of Denness arguing that while South African skipper Shaun Pollock was allowed to go scot free, the Indians were pulled up. "If the Indians were guilty of over-appealing, the same yardstick should have been applied against the South African skipper and he should have been pulled up," Malhotra said. The reactions came after the punishments by the match referee were confirmed on the last day of the second Test between India and South Africa at Port Elizabeth. Extras:
