England's tour of India
Ahemdabad: In a depressing show of defensive approach, India gave up its run chase even before it had begun and settled for a tame draw in the second cricket Test against England on Saturday.Needing 374 runs to win, India resumed at its overnight 17 without loss and batted excruciatingly slowly throughout the day to finish at 198 for three when play was called off after nine mandatory overs had been bowled.Only twice have teams batting fourth been able to score more runs than this to win a Test. But the Indians made absolutely no effort to make a match of it and looked predetermined to play for a draw. This, despite a solid foundation given by openers Shiv Sunder Das and Deep Dasgupta, the top scorers with 58 and 60 runs respectively, who had put on 119 runs for the first wicket. The duo had given their team an excellent platform to launch an onslaught and go after the target in the last twosessions. However, the scoring rate, which was understandably slow in the morning session, dipped further after the lunch break and once the two openers were dismissed in quick succession, the Indians just played out time.Sachin Tendulkar, who scored a brilliant century in the first innings, took 81 balls for his 26 runs while Rahul Dravid batted for more than two and a half hours to remain unbeaten on 25.
