Indian Airlines honours sports stars, to hike budget

New Delhi: National carrier Indian Airlines on Monday honoured its outstanding sportspersons cricketers Javagal Srinath, V V S Laxman, Harbhajan Singh and hockey star like Mukesh Kumar while committing itself to greater efforts for promotion of sports.
 The three cricketers and Mukesh Kumar were among the nine sportspersons, all employed by Indian Airlines, honoured by Civil Aviation Minister Shahnawaz Hussain for their outstanding contributions at the national and international levels. The others were hockey Olympian and former national coach Inam-ur-Rehman, ace full back Dilip Tirkey, carrom world champion A Maria Irudayam and shooter Vivek Singh. India's first Woman Grand Master, S Vijayalakshmi, busy with a tournament, could not make it here. Expressing pride in the achievements of the Airlines' sportspersons, Hussain advised the IA Sports Control Board (IASCB) to double its budget from the existing Rs 75 lakh per year to Rs 1.50 crore.
