Bangalore: The first ever One-Day Limited Over match at Chennai (formerly Madras) was held at Chepauk on October 9, 1987 between India and Australia, which incidentally happened to be a World Cup match in the 1987 edition. Australia won the match on an exciting note by one run with one ball to spare. Australia amassed 270 for six in the allotted 50 overs guided by a masterly 110 from G R Marsh. India was well on course to victory needing only 15 runs from four overs with four wickets in hand, through blistering knocks by Gavaskar (37), Srikkanth (70) and Sidhu (73). But Australia came back with some spirited bowling from McDermott. It is said that Kapil Devs show of sportsmanship as captain cost the match for India as he agreed with Australias contention that one of Dean Joness stroke wrongly declared as four be counted as six and thereby the target was increased by two runs. Ultimately the two-run margin made all the difference. This venue is also most remembered for the match in the Independence Cup on May 21, 1997 when Pakistan smashed 327 for five with Saeed Anwar making the highest Indiividual score of 194, which still stands as a world record. India fought back gallantly through Rahul Dravids brilliant 110, but ended up losing the match by 35 runs.Seven LOIs have been held at this venue so far in which India has figured in three matches one each against Australia, West Indies and Pakistan. The other matches, which have been held at this venue, are between Australia/Zimbabwe, Australia/West Indies, Australia/New Zealand and Bangladesh/Kenya. The touring England team will play its first match here whereas for India it will be the fourth occasion.
