England tour of India - Cricket: Kumble is 17th player to lead India, 5th to win

Bangalore: Anil Kumble became the 17th player and fourth from Karnataka to lead India in One-day Internationals when he captained India at Chennai versus England in the absence of injured S C Ganguly. Kumble celebrated his captaincy with a four-wicket win over the visitors. G R Viswanath was the first Karnataka player to lead India in an LOI. S M H Kirmani and R S Dravid have skippered India. Dravid led India versus Zimbabwe on December 14, 2000.Among the 17 Indian captains, Kumble is only the fifth Indian to record a win in his very first match as captain and 12 others have suffered defeats in their first appearances as skippers. Mohinder Amarnath is the only Indian not to lose or win his first match as captain as it ended in no result. Kumble had been the vice-captain the Indian team on several occasions in the LOIs. He has also donned the role of skipper in domestic cricket for Karnataka in Ranji Trophy and in almost all versions of the game including the recently held Challengers Trophy held at Bangalore. The mantle of Indian captaincy fell on him in the day/night match against England at Chennai on January 25.
