The first ever Limited Over International took place at this venue on 24.12.1986 when India met Sri Lanka. However though Sri Lanka was restricted to 195 for eight of the allotted 46 overs India was skittled out for a double-digit total of 78 in 24.1 overs.

Many would be surprised to know that the player who caused havoc among the Indian batsmen was neither a renowned fast bowler nor a spinner but an occasional bowler. In the later years he led Sri Lanka and came to be known as Captain Cool and even took his team on a ladder of everlasting fame by winning the World Cup.

The player referred to is none other than Arjuna Ranatunga.Including the above, a total of eight One-day International matches have been held at Kanpur. This venue has hosted two World Cup matches out of the eight One-day International matches (Sri Lanka/West Indies in 1987/88 and India/Zimbabwe in 1995/96).

For England this would be the second occasion when it clashes with India on January 28, having played here once on November 25, 1989 when India emerged victors and England would be eager to settle scores as it has lost two matches and won one in the current series.

The last time India played here was on December 11, 2000 when Zimbabwe was trounced by nine wickets and victory was achieved at over six runs an over. Of the 8 Limited Over matches, India has figured in seven of these, won five (vs English, Sri Lanka, Australia, Zimbabwe twice) and lost two (vs Sri Lanka and West Indies). One other match has been played here not involving India and that was between Sri Lanka and West Indies in 1987/88.
