Mumbai: In an almost exact copy of the script of previous match, India onceagain lost a battle of nerves to see England romp home by five runs in thefinal one-day international in Mumbai on February 3 and square the six-matchseries 3-3.The game progressed on exactly the same lines as the two- run loss in Delhion February 29 with India frittering away a comfortable position and losingthe match in a tense and exciting last over.Needing 11 off the last over to overhaul England's 255, India could managesix of the first three balls before Anil Kumble and Javagal Srinath got outoff successive balls. India were all out for 250 in 49.5 overs.

The victory looked almost certain when skipper Sourav Ganguly, who played afine knock of 80, and Dinesh Mongia were batting with India strongly placedat 155 for two near the half-way mark. But Mongia (35) was stumped by wicketkeeper James Foster and Ganguly fell 36runs later in an unfortunate fashion, playing on to his stumps whileattempting a sweep shot. The target was still achievable with the asking rate below five runs an overand six wickets in hand. But the Indians simply messed it up, the same waythey did in Delhi.Earlier in the day, England batsmen led by opener Marcus Trescothick flayedthe Indian attack and only a career-best bowling performance by off-spinnerHarbhajan Singh stopped them from reaching a more commanding total.

Trescothick, who had scored a century in the first match, was well on courseof another hundred before becoming one of the five victims of Harbhajan fiveruns short of the landmark. The left-handed opener, later declared the man of the match, flourished intwo fruitful partnerships, with his skipper Nasser Hussain for the secondwicket and Michael Vaughan for the third, to lay the foundation for a solidtotal.PTI
