New Delhi: Rohan Gavaskar, son of legendary India opener Sunil, was on Thursday named in an India 'A' squad for the upcoming tour of South Africa.
The 26-year-old Gavaskar, who plays for the eastern Indian state of Bengal, is a stylish left-handed batsman with 3,507 runs in 56 first-class knocks to his credit. The Indian second-string will play two four-day Tests and as many One-dayers against South Africa 'A' on the one-month tour starting next week, BCCI secretary Niranajan Shah said. Left-handed batsman Dinesh Mongia was named captain and former Test batsman Yashpal Sharma the coach of the 'A' team, Shah said. Mongia, who has figured in 13 One-day Internationals, is one of the six players in the team who have represented the country in either Tests or One-dayers at the senior level. Others are left-arm spinner Murali Kartik, seamers Amit Bhandari and Debashish Mohanty, and batsmen Mohammad Kaif and Jacob Martin. Coach Yashpal, a member of India's 1983 World Cup-winning squad, said the boys will learn a lot on the challenging tour. "It is a challenge to the cricketers who will be exposed to the bouncy wickets in South Africa," said Yashpal, who played 37 Tests and 42 One-day Internationals. "I am sure the experience they will gain on the tour will help them when they are picked for the national team in future." India 'A' squad: Dinesh Mongia (captain), Jacob Martin, Gautam Ghambhir, Amit Pagnis, Abhijit Kale, Venugopal Rao, Rohan Gavaskar, Mohammad Kaif, Parthiv Patel, L Balaji, Rakesh Patel, Amit Bhandari, Debashish Mohanty, Amit Mishra and Murali Kartik.
