London: England all-rounder Ben Hollioake, who was killed in a car crash in Perth on Saturday, had only recently agreed a new one-year deal with his English county side Surrey despite interest from Warwickshire. He was hoping that a successful 2002 season would lead to a place in the England team for the 2003 World Cup.But the nature of the deal with Surrey seemed to highlight the mercurial nature of a player whose talent and promise were never really fulfilled. Since he had been on tour with England, as part of its One-day squad in New Zealand before he headed for Australia, he had yet to sign the 12-month deal he asked for rather than the three-year contract Surrey originally offered. The 24-year-old, who only signed contracts on a year-by-year basis, had long been viewed as a player of enormous promise.
